The CAFÉ house as Living European Cultural Heritage – Performance in Rome

At the Italian event of the CAFÉ project, the café space of Casale dei Cedrati in Rome will become a site for experimentation, encounter, and shared reflection. The programme explores the coffeehouse not merely as a space of consumption, but as a living, continuously evolving form of cultural heritage.
As part of the CAFÉ: Redefining Café Houses as unique European Cultural Heritage project, Hungarian artists will also be featured: musician Mátyás Sirokai, together with the Kaland Duo — dance artists Orsolya Vágner and Verus Klausz — will present a joint performance that reimagines the everyday gestures of coffee drinking.
Through rhythm, movement, and interaction with the space and the audience, the performance investigates the connective power of coffeehouses: how these spaces are able to create community, memory, and collective experiences. The sounds of objects, the movements of bodies, and the spontaneous dynamics of the café are transformed into a performative language, bringing everyday life into dialogue with artistic research.

The Artists
Mátyás Sirokai
Füst Milán Award-winning poet, musician, editor, translator, and teacher. He graduated from the percussion department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and performed extensively with the Amadinda Percussion Group across Europe and the Americas. He has worked with numerous world music ensembles, with improvisation being his main area of interest. He is the author of six poetry books; his most recent volume, Lomboldal, received notable attention upon its publication in the Czech Republic.
Kaland – Orsolya Vágner and Verus Klausz
Kaland is an artist duo and community-based project exploring the freedom of movement, dance, and play. Orsi and Verus each have over ten years of artistic and pedagogical experience, and both graduated from the Budapest Contemporary Dance Academy.
Orsi also holds a degree from MOME, with several award-winning artistic research projects behind her. Verus has been teaching for years, leading groups with sensitivity and playful guidance.
They have been working together for a year and a half to help people rediscover the power of a “kaland attitude” — an openness to play, curiosity, and spontaneity. Kaland brings together all their shared passions: outdoor movement, creative use of space, playful rule-making, improvisation, dance, and curiosity.
