Join the Network of European Café Houses – OPEN CALL
For café houses, literary cafés, cultural cafés, and community-based hospitality venues across Europe
Issued by HADIK Coffee House, Budapest, within the framework of the CAFE project — Redefining Café Houses as unique European Cultural Heritage
Café houses have always been more than places to drink coffee. Across Europe, they have served as spaces of conversation, artistic creation, political imagination, social exchange, and everyday community life. They are places where people meet, ideas circulate, artists encounter audiences, and neighbourhoods become visible through culture.
Through the CAFE project — Redefining Café Houses as unique European Cultural Heritage, HADIK Coffee House and the international project consortium are building a European network of café houses that understand their role not only as hospitality venues, but also as cultural and civic spaces. The CAFE project is co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme and brings together HADIK Coffee House, ECCOM, ZRC SAZU, and KEA European Affairs.
We are now inviting café houses from across Europe to join the emerging Network of European Café Houses.
Why join the Network of European Café Houses?
By joining the network, your café house becomes part of a European community of venues, cultural organisers, artists, researchers, and hospitality professionals who believe that cafés can play an active role in cultural life.
Selected café houses will have access to:
- European visibility and networking
- Best practices from across Europe
- Training toolkit and practical resources
- Desk research and field research results
- Participation in a shared European identity
- Invitation to the final conference in Budapest
- Opportunities for future exchange
Who can apply?
We welcome applications from café houses and related cultural-hospitality spaces based in Europe, including:
- historic café houses;
- literary cafés;
- cafés with regular cultural programming;
- cafés connected to bookshops, galleries, theatres, music venues, cultural centres, or community spaces;
- independent hospitality venues that host artistic, social, educational, or civic activities;
- emerging café-cultural spaces that wish to develop their cultural role further.
Applicants do not need to be large institutions. We are especially interested in cafés that are rooted in their local communities, open to international exchange, and committed to the idea that café houses can be meaningful cultural spaces.
